Joel's Climbing Page

This is the climbing route "No Alternative" on Stone Mountain, NC (in Stone Mountain State Park). There is some fine friction climbing, along with a couple of routes that offer jams & laybacks, where the large flakes have peeled off the mountain. This route is a 5.7, a nice climb with some jams in the flake, and then pure friction at the top. That's me in the center of the picture. The belayer is near the tree in the center of the picture (at the top of the flake). This was taken in 1984 when I used to do this stuff a lot! I still do a bit every now and then with Scouts, but I'm not as limber as I used to be.

I used to wonder why folks went flyfishing...I'd see fishermen at Stone Mountain in the spring and watch with curiousity...then I was converted :-)

This is from Moore's Wall in Hanging Rock State Park, NC. This is at the top of the route "Staircase", a 5.5, but it finishes with a 50 foot half-body jam in an open book crack, with a chock right at the top. I sure was glad to get to the top. Hanging Rock is a nice place, but the rock can be a little crumbly and it's often difficult to find the routes. The only climbing is on Moore's Wall and Cook's Wall, with the main "tourist" rock off limits.
